Last time I wrote, I shared that I’m in a new exploring stage right now. And I have to be patient, which is something I’m not always very good at. I’m not ready to share the topic I’m playing around with, or the new questions I’m asking, but I’ll have some announcements soon. Meanwhile, I thought it would be fun to share a little bit about a new tool that I’m fooling around with.
A little background too—I tend to move around a lot when it comes to technique. It’s not that I get bored of particular techniques exactly, it’s just that I use them when I need them, and then if it’s irrelevant for the next project, then I’m done. When I am casting about to capture an idea, or explore a new topic, sometimes I need to add some tools to my toolkit. That’s always the fun part.
I bought this cool little new camera recently, but it’s not a regular camera. It doesn’t capture images with light. It’s a thermal camera; it captures images with temperature. It’s not a photograph, but a thermograph. The image above was not created using filters or anything—the colors represent the different temperatures in the image (orange being warmer, purple cooler). I can even shoot in the dark!
It’s used more often by engineers to see where there are heating leaks, and things like that. Or for hunters. It’s a tiny little camera that attaches to my iphone, but it records things I can’t see with my eyes. I love that. So much of my work is about seeing things differently, so when I find tools that allow me to play around and literally see things differently, I’m in heaven.
The camera is super low res, and I’m not sure what I’ll be able to do with the images yet, but it has sparked me, so I’m going to keep going.
What’s catching your eye and sparking you lately?
